About her work

In ongoing interdisciplinary investigations that interweave dance, movement and visual art, Sarah Sternat explores how the human body interacts with the material world. She is intensely concerned with the materiality of things and uses a variety of multimedia approaches to investigate the complex relationships between the human and the non-human. This approach is visible in her works in stage sets, costumes, paintings and sculptures as well as in performances. Through the fusion of movement, visual media and performative elements, the body is made comprehensible as a system that can be analyzed in terms of its inner and outer state and can be reassembled again and again.
In her works, this process of disassembling, examining and reassembling is repeatedly broken up and restarted. Whether in the field of visual art, performance or dance - the resulting works are snapshots that are subject to a constant process of reorganization. Sometimes all that remains of an approach is a blurred impression or an abstract fragment.
